So You Want To Start A Blog?

3 key things you may want to consider before you hit publish your blog.

Create your Niche:

In the beginning, you may not be clear on exactly what you want to share and that’s ok. I would recommend picking a few topics which will be your primary focus to help you get started. Having topics that you are passionate about will allow you over time to develop your own niche and make it clear to your readers what they can expect going forward. Stick with it for 6 months and if you need to reevaluate your topics and pivot that’s ok. It’s better to give something a good go than keep changing every week.

Find a Name:

A name is hard! Spend time on the name but don’t overthink it. You might want to check Namecheckr. This website shows what names are available on all the different social media platforms and the domain name (the www name you type in at the top). If the name is taken, no matter how good it is you may want to rethink it. Naming your blog something similar can cause confusion, make it harder for you to get found if they are more established and if the name is trademarked you could get into trouble legally.

Self-Host Your Blog:

Once you have a name and a niche it’s time to create your blog. I would recommend using WordPress for blogging. This means buying your own domain name on one of the many sites out there – we recommend Google Domains – and then using a company to host your blog – we recommend WP Engine. Once it’s all up and running it’s time for the fun to really begin as you start to design and then publish your blog!

Like most things that are new, starting your blog can be a steep learning curve at the beginning. It’s worth investing your time into learning the technical side if you need to and t be clear and consistent from the beginning, set you up well in the long term.

We love to see new blogs and find out what you are creating!
