Creating a home office using a room you already have

The Desk

The computer desk is the main central part of any home office. Which means that you’ll want to choose the perfect desk for your home office. Ideally, you want to have your desk face the door with a bright light near it. However, this might not always be possible in smaller homes. At the end of the day, the desk can go wherever you are comfortable. I often see people setting up desks in hall or bedroom cupboards so they can close them away once they are finished for the day. If you work from home permanently then I wouldn’t recommend this, but otherwise, it’s an excellent use of space.

So what should you look for in a desk? You just need to ensure that the table is sturdy enough to support your computer and important paperwork, plus it needs to have enough drawers to store your general office supplies. Before you start buying yet another furniture piece, I urge you to step back and think, “what are you actually using this piece for?”

Setting up your desk

Now that you have your desk or table, place your desk in the room where you would like it, make sure that the room is clean and organized. What you need to do now is start setting up your home office. Take each item on your desk individually and put it in that spot that will work best for you. Remember to incorporate each piece of furniture in the order in which you’ll use them. Such as: putting your computer on the right platform or on one of the shelves above it, then working around it.

While dusting, take a moment and see if there is anything that needs rearranging or another glance over. Often using the proper items changes the way you look at your desk.

Lightly move through your desk and collect everything and organize it. It doesn’t have to be an act of manicured legwork, a simple look in the corners can do the trick. Consider a stylish organizer for all those tiny items such as pen, paper clip and knick-knacks.
